When children are involved, they are provided with a safe forum enabling them to discuss their views and preference over how they would like matters concerning them to be resolved.
Any form of change in a family dynamic may be incredibly stressful for everyone involved. This is especially true if the argument centres on the couple’s separation or divorce and involves the children. The National Liverpool family Mediation

Because mediation encourages each individual involved to discuss their concerns openly without the need for lawyers to intervene, it is an extremely beneficial way for the parties to communicate and to reach agreement. The informality and openness of mediation is fundamentally why mediation has become a successful and popular way of resolving disputes.
It is still of course necessary for a divorce or marital separation to be made legal through the court process, but mediation has proved to be the most efficient means of settling relating issues that evolve. This may be to reach an agreement over access and arrangements for children, property and financial disputes arising from a marriage or civil partnership that has dissolved.

There is an expectation that the number of divorce cases that are coming before the courts is going to substantially decrease. This is due entirely to a change in the Children and Families Act, 2014 which will give more weight to mediation services. It is a fact that many courts consider that divorce cases should never have reached court without going through mediation.
They can be very expensive and waste a lot of court time on business that is considered to be trivial. The new change to the law means that couples will have to attend MIAMS (Mediation Information and Assessment meetings). Notably, this change to the law is thought to be in the interests of children.
